What difference would €50,000 make to your local primary school’s sports facilities? Earlier this year, Aldi launched the Play Rugby Sticker Competition for primary schools nationwide, which culminated in two schools winning €50,000 each to upgrade their sports facilities, as well as four schools winning €2,500 each, one school winning a training session with Paul O’Connell and every school that successfully completed the poster receiving sports kits.
Today, Aldi has announced the return of the initiative, with even more schools set to benefit from the competition.
The Competition:
Aldi and the IRFU have today announced the return of the Aldi Play Rugby Sticker Competition, which will once again give every primary school in the country the opportunity to be in with a chance of winning one of two €50,000 sports facility makeovers. The partnership has seen the Aldi Play Rugby programme double the number of schools signed up with an increase in the number of children taking part in the programme to over 109,000 during the 2018/2019 school season.
How is the competition bigger and better than before?:
As well as two primary schools winning €50,000 to put towards upgrading their sports facilities, this time around, 10 runner up primary schools will each win €10,000 to also spend on improving their sports facilities. In addition to this, all primary schools in the country will be sent two initial posters from Aldi to help them to kickstart their sticker collection. All of the initial posters will include a free returns label. Additional posters can be requested online atwww.aldi.ie/playrugby
Other prizes to be won:
One lucky runner up school will win a training session with Aldi Play Rugby Amabassador, Paul O’Connell along with a new set of school jerseys. Every primary school that returns a fully completed poster, will receive an Aldi Play Rugby Kit.
How to enter your primary school:
The competition is easy to enter and works by primary schools collecting 300 of Aldi’s exclusive Irish rugby men’s and women’s stickers for their primary school. Available in Aldi’s 139 Irish stores, shoppers collect one sticker for every €30 they spend in store between August 10th and November 8th.
Participating primary schools add the stickers to the Aldi Play Rugby Poster and for every 300 stickers collected, are in with a chance of winning.
Open to primary schools nationwide, teachers, coaches, parents and school children interested in taking part in the competition can learn more by visiting www.aldi.ie/playrugby
Speaking about the return of the competition, Aldi Play Rugby Ambassador Paul O’Connell said: “Good quality coaching, equipment and facilities make a huge difference in the early years of developing as a player. Aldi Play Rugby is already making a real impact with young kids, having helped over 109,000 girls and boys to lead a more active and healthy lifestyle through rugby. Now, for the second time this year, Aldi are giving two primary schools the opportunity to each win a €50,000 upgrade to their sports and playing facilities. The atmosphere when I visited one of the winning primary schools in May to tell them they had won €50,000 was electric, so I’d encourage every Irish primary school to get involved, and for Aldi shoppers to get behind their local schools and help them reach that 300 sticker goal.”
Aldi Ireland Group Buying Director John Curtin added: “Any school teacher or principal will tell you how challenging it is to fundraise for new school facilities and equipment. For the second time this year, we want to help twelve primary schools improve their sports facilities, giving pupils the opportunity to fulfil their potential through playing sport. This is a terrific competition prize, and it comes at an exceptional time for Irish rugby with the Irish team having inspired players and supporters of all ages and abilities.”
“As well as two primary schools winning €50,000 to put towards upgrading their sports facilities, this time around, 10 runner up primary schools will each win €10,000 to also spend on improving their sports facilities. Aldi is delighted to be part of Ireland’s rugby success from grassroots level, and to be supporting the building blocks of future teams through this competition, our wider Aldi Play Rugby programme and ongoing commitment to making healthy eating accessible at every day amazing prices.”
IRFU President Nicholas Comyn said today: “We are delighted to see Aldi bring back this promotion in stores. Aldi Play Rugby has gone from strength to strength in the past three years, and now more and more school children are getting involved in the game. Giving schools the chance to win some of these amazing prizes will only further help the spread of rugby at grassroots level.”
A national IRFU programme for primary school children, Aldi Play Rugby is a free, supervised and non- contact rugby programme that provides everything schools need to get started, including sessions with local IRFU staff, online coaching resources and free coaching equipment. The overall objective of the programme is to encourage school children to get active, participate in regular exercise in a safe and controlled environment and to eat healthily.
Over 109,000 children from over 1,200 primary schools across the country signed up to take part in the Aldi Play Rugby programme in 2018/2019. Since Aldi partnered with the IRFU in 2016, participation in the programme has increased by almost 50%. Almost half of the children taking part in the programme (47%) are primary school girls aged between 7-12.
