THE HAPPY PRINCE & THE SELFISH GIANT by Oscar Wilde

from the comfort of your own sitting room

The Happy Prince and The Selfish Giant are probably the best loved and most enduringly popular of all Oscar Wilde’s stories. The former is the bittersweet tale of a gregarious swallow who befriends a melancholy statue while en route to Egypt. The bird helps the Prince to alleviate the suffering of his poor citizens and in doing so learns profound truths about the nature of love and suffering.

Michael James Ford’s highly energised and physical performance has been acclaimed as a virtuoso piece of storytelling and has travelled widely.

It is now paired with a new production of The Selfish Giant devised and performed by well-known actress Bairbre Ni Chaoimh and Michael James Ford and three endearing puppet children, created by master puppeteer, Martin Cahill. Together they inhabit Wilde’s wonderful fairytale in which a grumpy giant is changed forever through the innocence and friendship of children.

Both stories are underscored with haunting live violin music arranged and performed by Philip Dodd and adapted from the orchestral works of Sergei Prokofiev and Camille Saint-Saëns.
