All systems go for RNLI 25th Helvick Swim & BBQ celebrations

It’s all systems go for the Annual Helvick Swim across Dungarvan Bay in aid of Helvick Head Lifeboat Station scheduled for 1.30pm Sunday July 28 on Helvick Pier.

We are honoured to have WLR’s Oliver Carroll as celebrity MC for the day and that WLRfm live broadcast unit will be with us on the pier from 1 to 3pm as part of our 25th anniversary celebrations of this great community fiesta in the Waterford Gaeltacht.

The Annual Helvick Swim & BBQ is a great family day out with attractions for all, including a dog show, King & Queen of Helvick and Prince & Princess of Helvick competitions, Wobbly Circus, SARDA Ireland, raffle for 18 fab prizes including one night B&B for two at the Cliff House Hotel.

“This year there are over 70 sponsored swimmers registered from all over Ireland and beyond, with a wait list in operation” said Hon RNLI Swim Co-Ordinator Oliver Clancy. “So we have increased the number of kayakers who provide support and safety for our swimmers. If you are an over 18 year-old experienced kayaker, we would love to hear from you” he added.

The aroma of the mouth watering burgers on the BBQ is always an integral part of the experience as are the cakes and beautiful sandwiches served by the RNLI Ladies Catering Committee.

Dungarvan Brass Band will perform live on the pier, while the ice creams, crisps and minerals will appeal to all ages.

There will be a fantastic array of quality RNLI merchandise, and a painting donated by renowned artist Michael Mulcahy will be auctioned.

If you want to leave the car at home, there are three additional 361 return Local Link services to Helvick for the summer months, running Monday to Sunday; the evening services will now run on a Sunday also. Kids under 18 go free for the month of July.

The spectacle of the swimmers accompanied by a safety flotilla of kayakers, ribs and other boats, swimming along the marked course across Dungarvan Bay from Ballinacourty will be quite a sight, and as they swim into Helvick Pier they will be greeted by a party in full swing.

Of course none of this would be possible without the huge commitment of time and effort by all the volunteers and the generous sponsorship from local and national businesses and the local media, who come on board for this fantastic community event in support of the brave crew of the Helvick Lifeboat who are always ready to answer the call to save lives at sea 24-7-365.

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea.
