Ag Eisteacht to run relational summer course for teachers to foster wellbeing in the school community

Cork charity, Ag Eisteacht, is running ABLE4Teachers, an evidence-based training programme in Cork to assist teachers to foster relational well-being in the school community.

Places are still available for the Department of Education approved course which runs from 2nd to 6th July 2018 at Deer Park CBS, St Patricks Road, Cork City. The training aims to highlight ways to build positive relationships and to create a supportive school environment.

It features a recognised, evidence-based brief intervention model, ABLE (Adopt a relational approach, Build, Listen and Empower), which enables those who use it to respond sensitively and appropriately to colleagues, parents and others who may ‘turn to’ them for support.

Dr Maeve Hurley, founder of Ag Eisteacht, said: “The programme explores a range of relational topics including factors that help to build good quality relationships, and, most importantly, the impact that family relationships, and particularly conflict, can have on children’s health and well-being.

“Our aim is to It provide knowledge, insight and resources to teachers to help them to engage with colleagues, parents and pupils in a sensitive and appropriate manner by building relational capability.”

94% of teachers who completed the course in 2017 said they would recommend the course to colleagues. The vast majority of participants said they would use the model daily or weekly.

Last year, an inspector from the Department of Education and Skills present at one of the training courses, stated: “The course reflects the key principles of the Department of Education and Skills’ guidelines on Well-being in Primary Schools, demonstrating how the fostering of health relationships with peers, teachers and school staff is essential to pupils’ positive experience of school and their cognitive and emotional development.”

The course is heavily subsidised by Ag Eisteacht and entitles national school teachers participating in the course to three EPV (Extra Personal Vacation) days.
